Enjoying Southern Thailand

And then there were two......

After a few days in Bangkok enjoying time with Nadia's brother Billy, and his wife Kathy and son Khalid, Nadia and Maya headed to the US so Maya could attend summer camp. Down to just two travelers, Mira and I decided to explore the sights and sounds of southern Thailand. We flew to Krabi where the beaches are absolutely beautiful and surrounded by dramatic rock cliffs and jagged mountains. We started on Ao Nang Beach and for the past week and have moved every couple of days to new locations. We started by taking a long-tail boat to Railay Beach where Mira was able to do some challenging rock climbing and where we snorkeled into dramatic water caves at the base of massive cliffs. Railay has no cars or motorized transport so you simply walk, mostly bare foot, along sand paths to get to various locations. The sunsets there were amazing and Mira watched in fascination as a couple were married on the beach and had a small reception in the sand.
A two hour ferry ride later, we found ourselves on Koh Phi Phi, an idyllic island in the middle of the Andaman Sea surrounded by clear blue water and white sand beaches. There we snorkeled off the beach and had the chance for Mira to see her first shark (a big one), and then did two boat dives where we saw amazing starfish, huge pufferfish, massive schools fish, and much more. Traveling south on another ferry, we landed ion Koh Lanta, a quite but beautiful island with beach bungalows and a laid back but active party scene for the 20-something backpackers. Mira and I rented a motor scooter and explored the island and had to stop one for a 4 foot monitor lizard to cross the road (amazing creature), we almost ran over a bright green snake crossing the road, and had to stop for a group of monkeys just sitting on the road forming a natural roadblock. As part of our exploration we also hiked into the forest and visited a cave and waterfall.
After another two ferry rides, we now find ourselves in Phuket, a very popular tourist destination in southern Thailand. We arrived late yesterday so have only had the chance to explore the beach near where we're staying. Today we'll get out and explore some more. We're looking forward to Nadia and Maya joining in a few days but also enjoying some quality Papa/Mira time. Hopefully during the trip I'll also have the chance for some solo time with Maya. Here are some pictures since my late posting, enjoy.    cheers, Rob
